Franz Erhard Walther
Franz Erhard Walther, born in Fulda, Germany, in 1939, is an artist who left an indelible mark on the art of the second half of the 20th century—his contribution is indeed significant, as he pioneered new directions and inspired countless contemporary artists.
His work lies at the intersection of minimalist sculpture, conceptual art, abstract painting, and performance art, while simultaneously raising fundamental questions about the conventional conception of the artwork as an immutable object, intrinsically tied to a pedestal or picture rails.
From the early 1960s onward, fabric became his material of choice. He used it to create sculptures with geometric cutouts that could be activated by one or more participants. Walther thus broke with the traditional conception of the artwork as a fixed and immutable object. The artwork exists through its manifestation. The artist is as much the creator as he is the instrument necessary for the sculpture; his body takes hold of it so that it takes on a physical, spatial, and temporal dimension.
Franz Erhard Walther made audience participation one of the driving forces of his art. His works engage visitors and mark a radical rethinking of the relationship between sculpture and action.
Franz Erhard Walther participated in the legendary exhibitions “When Attitudes Become Form” (1969), organized by Harald Szeemann at the Kunsthalle in Bern, Switzerland, as well as “Spaces” (1969) at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, United States. Since the 1960s, he has been invited to present his work in numerous international solo and group exhibitions. He participated in Documenta 5 through 8 (1972, 1977, 1982, 1987) in Kassel, Germany.
More recently, his work has been the subject of major solo exhibitions, such as at MAMCO in Geneva, Switzerland (2010), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain (2017), the Museo Jumex in Mexico City (2018), and DIA Beacon in Beacon, New York, USA (2021).
He was invited to the 57th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition “VIVA ARTE VIVA,” where he received the Golden Lion for Best Artist of the exhibition (2017).
He is represented by Jocelyn Wolff Gallery.
And today, for the first time in his career, an art jewelry project ...
In 2025, Franz Erhard Walther accepted MiniMasterpiece’s invitation to design a piece of jewelry. His interest in the body, and in the pivotal moment of transition from contemplation to action, suggested the creation of an extraordinary piece of jewelry.
The piece will be exhibited for the first time this coming October at Design Miami Paris (October 20–25, 2026) on MiniMasterpiece booth, room 15.
