Enrique Asensi
Enrique Asensi is a sculptor. Born in Valencia in 1950, he now lives and works in Cologne and Barcelona.
From 1972 to 1977, he studied at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. Asensi is part of the great tradition of Spanish sculpture.
In his sculptures, he combines two classic materials: steel and stone. Corten steel contrasts with stones of different colors such as diabase, dolomite, granite, limestone, and alabaster. Asensi sees and conceives sculpture from the surface. He composes spatial pictorial views. The flatness of the steel contrasts with the sculptural relief surface of the stone. The chromatic values of steel and stone form a harmonious whole. In addition to the macro view of the sculpture as a whole, Asensi creates various micro views of details such as perspectives, slits, curves, and layers. Asensi's works are featured in numerous collections and exhibitions, and he is also present in public spaces in Germany and Spain with various sculptures.
It was in 2020 that Enrique Asensi created his first miniature sculptures. Accustomed to monumental formats, the change of scale was drastic, yet the artist managed to retain all the power and complexity of the confrontations he likes to create between stone and metal.
For his monumental works, he mainly uses granite and Cor-Ten steel, while for his jewelry he uses diabase—similar to volcanic basalt—and brushed brass. He has been collaborating with the MiniMasterpiece gallery since 2021.
