Franz Erhard Walther x MiniMasterpiece
It is with great joy that we announce the gallery’s collaboration with the extraordinary artist FRANZ ERHARD WALTHER.
Walther has created, for the first time in his career, a necklace titled Bridge over time, in which three similar shapes—though of different sizes—are strung on a square chain. These geometric shapes are rigid, yet their rounded contours and slight curvature suggest a sense of flexibility.
The Bridge over Time project encapsulates the artist’s work through its forms, color, and the interaction it inspires. Indeed, for Walther, a sculpture truly exists only when it is activated by the viewer, who becomes an active participant by handling, touching, or wearing the works. The concept of this necklace as a wearable sculpture takes on its full meaning here.
The necklace, produced in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered pieces, comes with a custom-made wall mount made of wood and cotton, designed by the artist, which allows the necklace to be displayed when it is not being worn—or deactivated.
The Bridge over time necklace will be unveiled at Design Miami Paris, from October 20 to 25, at the Hôtel de Maisons, 51 rue de l’Université, Paris 7.
Franz Erhard Walther, born in Fulda, Germany, in 1939, is an artist who left an indelible mark on the art of the second half of the 20th century—his contribution is indeed considerable, as he pioneered new directions and inspired countless contemporary artists.
Walther participated in the legendary exhibitions “When Attitudes Become Form” (1969), organized by Harald Szeemann at the Kunsthalle in Bern, Switzerland, as well as “Spaces” (1969) at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, United States. Since the 1960s, he has been invited to present his work in numerous international solo and group exhibitions. He participated in Documenta 5 through 8 (1972, 1977, 1982, 1987) in Kassel, Germany.
More recently, his work has been featured in major solo exhibitions, including at the MAMCO in Geneva, Switzerland (2010); the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain (2017); the Museo Jumex in Mexico City (2018); and DIA Beacon in Beacon, New York, in the United States (2021). He was invited to the 57th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, “VIVA ARTE VIVA,” and was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Artist of the exhibition on that occasion (2017).
